Orders and result routing

Separate the order, result and follow-up workflow before escalating.

Lab-related workflow problems can involve order entry, external-result receipt, document classification, routing ownership, manual portals or follow-up responsibility. Start by identifying which operational handoff is failing.

Common workflow signals

  • A result arrives by fax, portal or document instead of the expected workflow.
  • Staff repeat orders or manual follow-up because status ownership is unclear.
  • An external result cannot be found by the receiving team.
  • Different locations use different methods for handling externally delivered results.
  • Staff cannot tell whether the problem is training, routing, access or a suspected interface/configuration issue.

Check the operational chain.

  1. Name the exact order or result task that should happen next.
  2. Identify the current owner and the expected receiving team.
  3. Confirm whether the item should arrive as a result, document, message, queue item or another locally approved object.
  4. Separate missing information from routing, access and follow-up ownership problems.
  5. Use the organization’s approved escalation path if the expected routing or system behavior appears incorrect.

What HelpEpic can help with

HelpEpic can help frame ownership, handoffs, exception paths, staff guidance and escalation readiness. It does not select laboratories, make clinical decisions, interpret patient results, change protected Epic configuration or replace your organization’s authorized IT, laboratory, security, compliance or clinical channels.

Escalate to authorized internal teams when needed

Use authorized internal channels for: patient-specific care, clinical interpretation, urgent or critical results, laboratory policy, test selection, access provisioning, security incidents, production outages, interfaces and protected configuration changes.

Do not submit patient information

Describe only the workflow category and operational handoff. Do not submit patient names, dates of birth, medical-record numbers, diagnoses, results, screenshots, clinical records, credentials or other patient-identifying or confidential information.
